Fair Seas warmly welcomes the establishment of Páirc Náisiúnta na Mara, Ciarraí, Ireland’s first marine national park, announced on April 22, 2024. This milestone marks a significant step in recognising the national and international importance of Ireland’s coastal and marine biodiversity.

A Critical Step for Marine Conservation
The Kerry coast and surrounding waters were highlighted in our 2022 ‘Revitalising Our Seas’ report as a key area for biodiversity conservation. This region supports diverse marine life, including seabirds, sharks, skates & rays, and vital seabed habitats. Furthermore, in 2023, the area was designated a ‘Hope Spot’ by Mission Blue, an initiative led by renowned oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle. This designation places Ireland’s marine environment alongside globally recognised locations like the Galápagos Islands and the Great Barrier Reef.
Prioritising Biodiversity Management Plans and Local Engagement
For Páirc Náisiúnta na Mara to be a success, biodiversity conservation and restoration must be at the heart of future planning. As stated by Minister Malcolm Noonan TD, the park must serve as a flagship for environmental protection. Local coastal communities must be involve in the creation of these plans from the beginning to ensure effective governance. An inclusive plan development process is key to ensuring sustainable use, cultural recognition, and the long-term success of the Páirc. Fair Seas has spent a lot of time engaging with the coastal communities across Kerry at several events and featuring the views of Kerry’s coastal communities in the award-winning short film Fair Seas: The Kingdom of Kerry.
Challenges and the Path Forward
The park’s marine areas are already designated as Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) and Special Protection Areas (SPAs). Fair Seas urges the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) to clearly outline how these sites will achieve their conservation objectives and deliver enhanced biodiversity benefits beyond existing protections. Adequate research, monitoring, and transparent stakeholder engagement will be critical.
Measuring Success
The true success of Páirc Náisiúnta na Mara will be measured by improved biodiversity outcomes. Additionally, success should reflect community engagement, cultural heritage preservation, and local economic benefits. Fair Seas looks forward to collaborating with stakeholders to ensure this marine park reaches its full potential as a model for future conservation efforts in Ireland.
